Here’s the thing, you can have the best website, but it won’t mean anything if nobody can find you. Your business website needs traffic to survive and if you are relying on people to find you through a Google search, then search engine optimization (SEO) should be your top priority.

Did you know that over 75% of people will not even click on the second page of the search results? This means that if you are not on the first page, you are only getting 25% of the traffic.

All the sites that rank on the first page of the search results work on one thing very well: Improving their SEO.

There are many things you can do to improve your SEO Ranking, they are:

  1. Use appropriate Keywords

Keywords play a major role in boosting your SEO. Using relevant keywords in your content will help you rank in SEO results. Here are few things you need to keep in mind when writing your content:

  • Target specific keywords that your users might search
  • Avoid using multiple keyword phrases and make separate pages for each targeted keyword
  • Try to use part or all the keyword phrase in the page URL page title, page headings and subheadings.
  • Repeat your keyword phrase several times throughout your content.
  • Link to relevant sources to your website and even to other websites which may be useful.
  • Highlight the keyword phrases by using bold, italics, emphasis tags and heading tags especially H1.
  • Do not overdo! Make sure you are writing your content for the user and not the search engine.

  1. Optimize Your Website for Mobile

In today’s day and age almost, everyone has smartphones. More than 50% of Google searches come from mobile devices so if your website is not optimized for mobile then you are losing half of your traffic!

Although it might sound expensive at first, but you may seriously want to consider creating a mobile app. A mobile app can help you boost your SEO at a high level. When a user searches for keywords in your niche, they will find your app, and that is how your SEO gets boosted.

For example, when a user searches “book a hotel room” on Google, they will find an app on page one. Your app automatically becomes a valuable resource if it pops up on a Google search. Hence, despite of being a little expensive, having an app can boost your SEO greatly.

  1. Update Quality Content Regularly

There is no substitute for quality content. Your content is the number one driver of your search engine rankings. Publishing quality content with relevant keywords that are targeting your customers will improve your SEO rankings greatly.

Moreover, you might have noticed that the pages that update their content regularly rank higher in SEO. This is because, regularly updated content is a good indicator of the site's relevancy. So, make sure to keep your content fresh.

  1. Improve Your Page Loading Speed

Did you know that 40% of visitors will abandon websites if the page takes longer than 3 seconds to load? And hence it should not be surprising that your page speed is one of the driving factors in your SEO rankings.

A slow-loading website can greatly decrease your chances of getting users that convert. Test your site’s speed for both desktop and mobile by entering Google’s Page Speed Insights page. This tool will help you analyse your page speed and improve the areas you are lacking.

  1. Have a link-worthy site

Adding other relevant website links to your webpage will help your visitors learn more about what they are interested in, and will improve your search engine optimization greatly.

Adding relevant links also makes your content unbiased and improves your credibility. Avoid using "click here" links and try writing out the destination name instead. For example, "Click here" has no search engine value whereas "Best Hotels in Florida" is rich with keywords and will improve your search engine rankings as well as the ranking of the page you are linking to. Using descriptive links not only improves your SEO but also makes it easier for your users to understand their destination link better.

  1. Use alt tags

Alt tags describes the appearance or function of an image on a page. It is used by visually impaired users or display in place of an image if it fails to load. It is indexed by search engine bots to better understand the content of your page. That is why you need to describe your image and videos using alt tags. They are crucial for your SEO as they allow search engines to locate your page especially for those who use text-only browsers or screen readers.

  1.  Encourage sharing on social media

It is a pretty much common knowledge that every business website needs to be active on social media. Your SEO ranking also gets improved when people share links to your website on social media.

Include social sharing icons on all your content and don’t forget to share links on your social media pages. If your link appears on people’s timelines, then all it takes is one click for them to share it. Soon you will be seeing great SEO results if you encourage social sharing regularly.

Conclusion

SEO is something that your website needs to focus on right now and the sooner the better. You may try implementing some of the strategies I have talked in here. Of course, it might get a little overwhelming if you are starting out a little late.
